Staying Financially on Track Before Harvest

Jun 10, 2026 | Insights

With the crop in the ground, many Canadian farmers are focused on the field—but mid‑season is also a key time to stay financially on track. Halfway through the season is often when small financial gaps quietly turn into bigger problems. By mid‑season, you’ve got a clearer picture of your costs—inputs are largely paid for, crop conditions are taking shape, and expectations around yield are starting to form. This is one of the most overlooked financial checkpoints of the year.

It’s a chance to step back and ask a few key questions:
1. Where is cash flow sitting today?

2. How much flexibility is left on operating lines? And

3. If conditions change—weather, prices, or costs—how does that impact the rest of the year?

What we often see is that farms that take time to review these numbers now tend to avoid reacting later. Because once harvest starts, decisions speed up—grain marketing, debt repayment, tax considerations—and there’s less room to adjust. Mid‑season isn’t just about watching the crop—it’s about making sure the financial side of the operation is still aligned with where things are headed.

One of the biggest opportunities right now is planning around cash flow and timing. If your crop is looking strong, this is the time to start thinking about how income might flow later this year—when grain gets sold, how much cash might build up, and what pressures that could create from both a tax and financing standpoint.

On the other hand, if conditions are more uncertain, this is where flexibility matters most.  Understanding your current financial position helps you make adjustments early—rather than reacting later when options are more limited. This is also a good window to start coordinating with your accountant and financial advisor. Whether it’s preparing for tax planning, managing debt, or setting expectations for harvest decisions, doing that work now usually leads to better outcomes than waiting until everything is happening at once.

Midseason is really about positioning—putting yourself in a spot where you’re making decisions intentionally, not under pressure.
